Reading & Writing

The reading framework contains guidance for primary and secondary schools to meet existing expectations for teaching reading.

The writing framework outlines a common approach to teaching writing based on evidence and existing good practice. The Department for Education (DfE) hosted a webinar about the writing framework on 30 September 2025, which can be accessed here.

Choosing a phonics teaching programme helps schools analyse and select validated programmes for teaching reading using systematic synthetic phonics.

Supporting all readers in secondary school is a short course for secondary school staff and leaders to develop techniques to support readers at all levels.

The Summer Reading Challenge is a free, UK-wide programme run by The Reading Agency and public libraries to get children reading for enjoyment. Visit the Summer Reading Challenge School Zone to register and download free resources, including presentations for assemblies and parent events, communications templates and pupil activity sheets to use during the summer term.

The Unlocking Reading programme, developed by FFT Education and Royal Holloway, University of London, is designed to build confidence in schools to better support secondary-aged pupils with reading.
